ECO DATA RECOVERY

High Capacity microSDXC Cards by SanDisk

Wow! I remember when the rapid growth of of higher capacity USB Flash drives always seemed to be a hot topic among my fellow I.T. workers. Not to date myself, but at that time I worked at an I.S.P. that provided ‘dial up’ internet access and web hosting. Believe it or not, it was only about 12 or 13 years ago that people would check their local telco website to see if ‘high speed’ DSL was  available in their area. That was here in South Florida which at the time was attempting to brand itself as ‘The Internet Coast’.

Around the same time, having 4MB USB Flash Drive or SD Card was considered cutting edge. The data storage field has advanced along the same rapid pace that internet access and speeds has grown.

SanDisk just announced on February 24th 2014, that they have released the worlds highest capacity microSDXC memory card with 128GB of storage. Now they are available in 128GB.
I simply used the dial up access analogy earlier as a basic point of time reference as I can imagine that in the not too distant future, we will be looking back and and wondering how we ever survived with only 128GB of storage available on a microSDXC Card.

Consumers can now easily store 16 hours of Full HD video, over 7,000 songs, more than 3,000 photos and over 100 apps all on a single removable SD card that’s just about the size of a postage stamp. This also says something about our need for mobility, large amounts of data and having a world of information literally right at our fingertips. Basically SanDisk has increased the storage capacity of microSD cards 1,000 times over in the past 10 years. That is incredible!

All of this new and rapidly evolving storage technology is simply amazing. However from the standpoint of someone who is the data recovery field, and can sometimes be considered a bit of a realist, I have to wonder what if any, changes will be felt at data recovery companies. It’s no secret that our ‘bread and butter’ comes from hard drives with moving mechanical pieces that have crashed, or mechanically failed. (Not to mention software and Operating System failures.) Prices for solid state hard drives (SSD) will soon be dropping even more, and I would venture to say they will also be more widely used in desktop and laptop computers as well as for external storage devices.

Providing there is not significant damage to the media, hard drives have always been able to be ‘rebuilt’ for the sake of recovering the data. This type of storage media may or may not be as forgiving. With SD cards, solid state hard drives, and now micro SD cards that are used in smart phones and tablets, repair and recovery may not always be an option. As with any digital storage device, there are  “It depends”, when it comes to Data Recovery from these devices.

It doesn’t take a psychic or someone in business development to know that as data storage evolves, Data Recovery Companies and the technology used will need to evolve with it in order to stay competitive and be viable option.

(*Note: Data Recovery should never be considered an alternative to data backup, and every business should have a disaster recovery and business continuity plan.) Files stored to these devices whether they be HD video, pictures, songs, or anything that you can think of, is still essentially millions and millions of “1’s and 0’s” when you get down to the ‘nitty gritty’ of data storage.

Broken SD Card Recovery

Recently we had a very, very nervous and frantic photographer who had more more than one wedding stored on her SD card that was sent in for data recovery. Not only was her business on the line, but also the precious and priceless memories created at said weddings. (I always say that this type of data is not easily recreated, if it can even be recreated at all.) How many of us store pictures of our children on cameras, flash drives and of course hard drives.

The customer who sent this in for recovery did not know exactly how her card had initially failed. However the technician who recovered the data advised me that it involved, very, very tiny parts on the card itself and required component level repair work. This could have resulted from rough handling and/or use, or possibly poor manufacturing. These are very small devices that can hold some very important and increasingly larger amounts of data.

The good news is that ECO Data Recovery recovers Flash media and SD cards and we were able to recover the data. Each and every image that was stored on the card was recovered in perfect working condition, the photographer was understandably relieved beyond belief and there’s a good chance that the bride(s) and groom(s) never knew that all the memories of their special day was hanging ‘in the balance’.

At the risk of sounding redundant (pardon the pun): “If your data is important, make a backup and then make a backup of your backup.”
